Matt Gogel shot an 8-under-par 64 on Saturday to take the lead after two rounds of the Constellation Furyk & Friends tournament at Timuquana Country Club in Jacksonville, Fla.
Gogel, 54, has a 12-under 132 total and a three-shot lead over second-place Cameron Percy of Australia entering the final day of play. Gogel, who was tied for fourth place with a 68 after the first round, had one eagle, seven birdies and one bogey on Saturday.
Gogel's 64 tied the tournament 18-hole scoring record after he got four birdies to start the second round and five birdies on his first six holes.
Of his fast start, Gogel said: 'We're trained to play one hole at a time, right? I made a birdie on 1, 2 and 3. And then 4 you don't expect, that's like a 210-yard par 3, tough to hit the green. I settled in, and really the key I think was the back nine. ... So I'm in good shape.'
Gogel, who is looking for his first career Champions win, had his eagle on the back nine -- on the par-5 13th -- along with two birdies.
Percy, the first-round leader at 8-under 64, shot a 1-under 71 on Saturday and is at 9-under 135 after two rounds. He said the wind was his biggest challenge of the second round.
'Yesterday the wind was consistent; we knew where it was. Today it was everywhere,' Percy said Saturday. ...'I had no control on my shots today; it kept going too far on me. I really struggled.'
Tommy Gainey shot a 67 on Saturday to share third place with Soren Kjeldsen (68) of Denmark at 8-under 136. David Duval, Chad Campbell and Vijay Singh of Fiji were tied for fifth at 137.
'Tough conditions around here,' said Duval, who had three birdies and the rest pars in the second round.
Singh has won five times on the senior tour, but only once since 2018.
