BEIJING, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- The latest round of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has dragged on for nearly two years, claiming more than 65,000 lives in Gaza, nearly half of them women and children, and leaving 2 million people mired in a humanitarian catastrophe. This has made the Palestinian issue an unavoidable focus of the High-Level Week of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Following the announcements of Britain, Canada, Australia and Portugal on Sunday, France, Belgium, Andorra, Luxembourg, Malta, and Monaco declared their recognition of the Palestinian state on Monday, increasing the number of countries recognizing a Palestinian state to over 150.

This record number strongly reflects the increasing consensus in the international community on the urgent need to implement the two-state solution.

This wave of recognition primarily responds to the historical injustices suffered by the Palestinian people. The two-state solution is the only feasible way to resolve the Palestinian issue. It serves as a forceful rebuke of the United States' repeated and irresponsible abuse of its veto in the UN Security Council -- blocking ceasefire resolutions and obstructing the legitimate path toward Palestinian statehood.

Since the outbreak of the conflict, the United States has not only kept supplying weapons to Israel but has also repeatedly wielded its veto in the UN Security Council to block ceasefire resolutions. In doing so, Washington has defied global public opinion and left itself increasingly isolated on the Palestinian issue.
