A month after saying she would be taking time away from tennis to have a baby, former world No. 1 doubles player Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic announced Tuesday that she was retiring from tennis.
She said in a statement from Prague that "Until now, tennis was the only world I knew. I have always had enormous love for this amazing sport. Even though all the pain, tears, renunciation and sweat, all the great moments and victories were worth it."
Strycova, 35, is due in September and said she doesn't plan to return to the women's tour after giving birth to her son.
She won two WTA singles titles and 31 in doubles, including the 2019 Wimbledon doubles champion with Hsieh Su-wei. At the same tournament, she reached the singles semifinals, losing to Serena Williams.
She won more than 500 career doubles matches (507-261) and helped the Czech Republic to six Billie Jean King Cup crowns since 2011. At the 2016 Olympic Games, she partnered with Lucie Safarova to defeat Venus and Serena Williams in the first round of the event -- the first-ever defeat for the Williams sisters in four Olympics.
Strycova ends her career as the No. 2 doubles player in the world.
