Alun Wyn Jones set to be named Lions captain on SA tour - UK reports

UK reports are that Wales' Six Nations-winning captain Alun Wyn Jones is set to be named British and Irish Lions tour captain by head coach Warren Gatland this week.

According to the Telegraph, the 35-year-old will pip possible younger players Maro Itoje, who was widely touted as the favourite to skipper the Lions on tour to South Africa, and England captain Owen Farrell.

Many South African eyes will be fixed on Gatland, who will name his 36-man Lions squad on Thursday ahead of the much-anticipated box office rugby tour starting in July.

The current Chiefs (New Zealand) head coach has tried his best to keep his cards close to his chest despite the widespread speculation surrounding his team.

Four years ago, a photo leak on social media revealed that Sam Warburton would captain the Lions for the second straight time moments before the official announcement.

Wyn Jones is the most internationally capped rugby player in history with 157 appearances for Wales and the Lions. He captained the Lions in Australia in 2013 for the final Test after Warburton sustained an injury.

He has also played in the last nine straight Lions tour Tests, dating back to 2009 when the Lions were last in South Africa.
