Unseeded Shelby Rogers upset third-seeded Johanna Konta of Great Britain 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Adelaide International in South Australia on Tuesday.
Rogers hit 23 winners against 10 unforced errors for her fifth win over a Top 20 opponent since the start of 2020. Earlier this month, she advanced to the fourth round of the Australian Open, where Konta was forced to retire in the first round against Kaja Juvan because of an abdominal injury.
In Adelaide, the American capitalized on Konta's subpar serve, seizing four of six break opportunities as well as winning 69 percent of the points on Konta's second serve and 42 percent of points on her first serve.
No. 7 seed Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan toppled Laura Siegemund of Germany 6-4, 6-4 to move into the second round. Next up for Putintseva is qualifier Storm Sanders, ranked No. 292 in the world, who defeated fellow Australian Ajla Tomljanovic 6-1, 6-2.
It was the third career win over a Top 100 player for Sanders.
In other first-round action, sixth-seeded Petra Martic of Croatia rallied from a set down to defeat Liudmilla Samsonova of Russia 4-6, 6-0, 7-5. Next up for Martic is qualifier Coco Gauff, who defeated Jasmine Paolini of Italy 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-2.
Misaki Doi of Japan also needed three sets to defeat Anna Blinkova of Russia 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-2.
No. 5 Iga Swiatek of Poland had an easier time, eliminating Madison Brengle 6-3, 6-4.
