Thousands of Tibetans to be evicted

Australian Herald Saturday 11th December, 2010

A hydroelectric project in China is due to dam up 3 rivers in Lhundrub County, just above the Tibetan capital of Lhasa

Thousands of peasants will be deprived of their homes and land to cultivate when the dam goes ahead.

More than 4 thousand residents in Phodo, Lhundrub County, have been told to leave the area to make way for the economic development project.

Radio Free Asia has reported that the Chinese are building bridges and blocking the river.

Chinese soldiers have supposedly already built houses for the Chinese soldiers who have arrived to ensure there are no demonstrations.

The rivers which will be captured by the dam are the Radreng, Lhaching and Pachoe.

They all flow near Phodo.

Some families have already been removed and all will be transferred before September 2011.

The Chinese government has warned them they will no longer be able to cultivate or irrigate their land, nor grow crops.
