ANU, Questacon fail radiation regulations

The Australian National University breached federal radiation and nuclear safety regulations by failing to provide adequate safety training for a student and researcher who conducted a risky experiment with radioactive material. In April last year a postgraduate student and a researcher from the ANU's Research School of Biology conducted a ''tracer'' experiment with a low-energy beta particle emitter without following correct procedures.An ANU spokesperson said the researchers handled the material in an unsafe manner and failed to consult the university's radiation safety officer as an interim step. ''There was the potential to expose the researchers as a result. In the end no one was exposed to radiation levels which exceeded normal, safe, working levels.''The spokeswoman said the breach ...
