The ACT Government will tackle Australia's biggest killer cardiovascular disease with a preventive program funded in tomorrow's budget.The local arms of the Heart Foundation and Division of General Practice will run the three-year pilot project that aims to improve detection and ensure that Canberrans at high risk get help to decrease their chance of developing the life-threatening disease. GPs will use the Australian Cardiovascular Risk Chart to calculate risk for patients aged between 45-75 years. Canberrans who are classified as high risk will be referred to a community-based lifestyle coach with the aim of supporting long-term behavioural change.Patients who are found to be at increased risk of cardiovascular disease will be provided with information and support to reduce their risk th...
