Australia grows by lowest level since '06

As of June 30 last year, Australia's population reached 22.33 million - an extra 377,100 people from the year before.Inner-city areas, outer suburbs and along the coast saw most of the increase, while the population declined in inland and rural areas, particularly those affected by drought.The Australian Bureau of Statistics also said today that population growth in Australia's capital cities had slowed for the first time in six years.Growth had been steady in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and the other capitals since 2003/04, but fell to 1.8 per cent in 2009/10.Melbourne enjoyed the biggest overall jump of the capitals, adding another 79,000 people to tip it over the four million mark for the first time.
