Fox Business Thursday 6th January, 2011
BKS ) reported its strongest bookstore holiday sales in over a decade, helped primarily by its NOOK e-reader and rapidly improving online business. For the nine-weeks ending Jan. 1, the nation’s largest bookseller posted a sales increase of 8.2% to $1.1 billion, with comparable store sales up 9.7%, marking its strongest gain in more than 10 years. Sales were helped by strong demand for its NOOK, which virtually eliminated all inventory of NOOKcolor and E-Ink products and helped the company achieve its largest sales day in its history on Dec. 23. Nook’s helped drive online demand as well, with 60% of NOOKcolor owners purchasing items at its digital store. Barnes&Noble.com sales totaled $228.5 million, a 67% jump from a year ago.
