I needed a hotel overnight near LAX and decided on the Crowne Plaza, a 4 star recently-renovated business class hotel on West Century Boulevarde. The main attractions were it's recent renovation, and claim that it was the newest hotel near LAX, and the fact that all rooms had high speed Internet access, and there was an airport shuttle. After waiting at the hotel stop outside the terminal I greeted the shuttle within just a few minutes. A short drive to the hotel had me checking in to Room 1135 on the eleventh floor. I took one of 4 lifts to the 11th floor. The hotel looked a little older than the 2000 refurb, but was in quite reasonable shape, other than for the room doors which appeared knocked around a little. I entered Room 1135 which was quite spacious, well decorated with a classy wallpaper, light to medium timber furnishings, an extended arm chair, a work desk with swivel chair, phones on one of the bedside tables, and the work desk. The TV was in a large timber cabinet above a 3-drawers chest. The bed was comfy, and like all the other furniture in the room was virtually new. The bathroom was immensely spacious, again well decorated with plenty of lighting and bench space. I needed to catch up on some work so I went to set up high speed Internet access. It didn't work, so I telephoned downstairs, they said an engineer would be sent up. After a while I telephoned again, and they said he was on his way. I had already telephoned the service provider, Cais, but the number was disconnected. The engineer eventually arrived, but was unable to effect connection. He mentioned the providor had "gone out of business", but that other guests in the hotel were able to connect. He then said he would drop by some instructions on changing settings on my computer, which may assist. He did this, but the instructions didn't help, so I gave up, organised telephone access, finished my work and then went downstairs to the bar. The waiter appeared extremely busy although there were only 5 people in the bar. The brasserie had already closed as it was after 11pm. Afterwards I returned to the room and retired only to realise the sound-proofing at the hotel was virtually non-existant. This was unusual for an airport hotel, as most of them have all windows double-glazed. The hotel window looked out over the terminal, and some of the planes taking off and landing were quite loud as far as noise went. The next day I checked out, and again boarded the shuttle to the airport. The hotel is close by to the Los Angeles terminals, so it is convenient. The 4 star rating is probably a touch over the top, and the noise is a factor. Other than that the hotel was fine as a stopover. They also need to find another providor of high speed Internet access, although by the time this review is published hopefully that has been done.
